First came the hail.

Then there was heavy rain that no one in the affected villages has experienced so heavily.

The thunderstorm on Monday evening caused severe damage to communities in the Miesbach district.

Valley / Warngau / Weyarn -

"The water shot up from everywhere, it oozed out of every crack in the ground." Warngau's fire brigade commander Johann Eder felt like many comrades and even older citizens on Monday evening.

Nobody could remember a storm with such high water force.

"So far unique in its form," confirms District Fire Inspector (KBI) Andreas Schwabenbauer.

"That the water is pushing in from the fields so quickly and in such quantities is new to us."

The thunderstorm was approaching from the west, and the first alarms went off at around 7.30 p.m.

As reported by the district office, around 70 cellars had to be pumped out.

The situation came to a head to such an extent that preparations were made to evacuate the residents of several parts of the community of Weyarn - which in the end was not necessary.

Nevertheless, the district office determined from 10.09 pm to 0.40 am "Article 15 of the Disaster Protection Act", the preliminary stage of the disaster.

District Fire Councilor Anton Riblinger thus acted as the superordinate head of operations and was able to better coordinate emergency services.

A total of 608 volunteers were on duty, including BRK and THW.

25 of the 36 district fire brigades helped to contain the floods.

Support came from the military in the districts of Munich and Rosenheim.

The thunderstorm came from the west, crossed Otterfing and Holzkirchen without leaving any damage.

Immediately behind it the locks opened, the storm line stretched from Darching (community Valley) to Irschenberg.

“In Osterwarngau it poured 50 liters per square meter in 20 minutes,” reports Warngau's mayor Klaus Thurnhuber.

“It's amazing what came down in a short time.

No gully can handle that. ”The district of Wirtsbreite, Allerheiligenweg, Riedstrasse was particularly affected, as was Osterwarngau.

The community announced that this Wednesday a street sweeper will clean the streets.

Heavy rain in the Holzkirchen region: "It's amazing what came down in a short time"

The lowering of the B 318 in Oberwarngau ran to capacity in a very short time. "A car floated up," reports Commander Eder. The two occupants saved themselves on the roof, the fire brigade pulled the car out of the flood. The B 318 and the district road MB 17 near Thalham were closed, the motorway was hardly passable after the hailstorm. In Oberwarngau and on Weyarner Berg, according to the district office, there were minor mudslides. Many small streets were closed.

In Oberdarching and parts of Mitterdarching, about ten houses were full, according to commander Bernhard Huber.

The hail left snow-white areas, brooks rushed down from Fentberg and Schmidham.

"The water was knee-deep in the village," reports KBI Schwabenbauer.

“The cellars have filled up to the ceiling.” Two oil tanks burst, another over in Stürzlham (Weyarn municipality).

A specialist company is required to pump out the oil-water broth from these cellars.

In large parts of Weyarn, land was under.

"A blue light on every corner," reports Mayor Leonhard Wöhr.

Weyarn's second in command Daniel Arbinger found hailstones with a diameter of up to four centimeters.

In Weyarn itself, Thalham and especially Stürzlham, torrents poured out of the fields.

“We have experience with storms,” says Arbinger, “but I have never seen this before.” A firefighter and a local resident were easily injured during rescue work in Stürzlham.

Stormy night in the Miesbach district: snow plow in action

According to initial findings, the storm night did not cause any more injuries.

Nevertheless, the affected citizens would go through a lot now, Wöhr knows.

“Water in the house, that's hard.” Even if everything dries up at some point, “all the sludge remains down to the ground floor,” says Wöhr.

"That stinks for weeks."

Hail smashes the roof

The hailstones got shot in the Weyarn districts.

Corn fields were torn apart, holes punched in gardens.

“We were just about to start an exercise,” says Gotzings Commander Ludwig Bichler.

The troop saw live how the hail dented their cars and smashed the garage door of the fire station.

Many roofs were damaged.

In Kleinpienzenau, the locks in the Weiss car dealership broke through the large windows in the flat roof.

“The hail looked like small discus disks,” says managing director Markus Weiss.

Even a double layer of plexiglass did not withstand the bullets.

The Weyarner Bauhof installed the snow plow and, according to Wöhr, cleared the streets of hail, branches and leaves.

The hail has largely defoliated many trees.

“My wife has lived in Gotzing for 60 years,” says Wöhr.

"She has never seen such hail there before."

In order to cope with the many simultaneous emergency calls, the fire brigade set up a coordination point in the Holzkirchen ambulance station.

The BRK was part of the crisis team.

The Red Cross provided a support group and a catering unit.

In view of the weather forecast, the district office warns of further storms with heavy rain, wind and hail and asks that houses and cellars be secured and not put yourself in danger.
