The diplomatic crisis between Canada and China reached a peak with the conviction Wednesday morning by Beijing of businessman and specialist in North Korea, Michael Spavor, to eleven years in prison for espionage.
The day before, his compatriot, Robert Schellenberg, was sentenced to death for drug trafficking, after his appeal was rejected.
Beijing's decisions come at a key moment.
Ottawa arrested Meng Wanzhou, director of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, in Vancouver on December 1, 2018, at Washington's request, on charges of fraud.
The United States has requested his extradition.
China arrested Michael Spavor and ex-Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig nine days later in retaliation.
Canadian justice must rule on the extradition of Meng Wanzhou in the coming days.
