Weissach

- With satisfaction, Johanna Ecker-Schotte lets her gaze wander over the lush wooden structure that is currently being built on the area of the Rottach animal shelter. The area of the building alone measures around 290 square meters, plus a 375 square meter outdoor area. “We deliberately didn't want a concrete block, but rather design the building as close to nature as possible,” says the chairwoman of the Tegernseer Tal animal protection association. The association is the sponsor of the only animal shelter in the Miesbach district and was able to make the almost one million euro investment - including a new cistern for fire protection - possible thanks to two bequests. Animal shelter manager Markus Glanz estimates that the building will be ready in winter.

First and foremost, it is dogs that should find a temporary home here.

Ten spacious dog rooms for lost, handed over and retired animals as well as an infirmary and a quarantine area with its own access lock are being created in the idyll of the Weissachauen.

"Everything exactly according to the instructions," emphasizes Ecker-Schotte.

Illegal puppy transports: Now the Rottach animal shelter can help

In view of the increasing number of illegal puppy transports, the chairman is particularly interested in the fact that dogs that have to be quarantined first can be admitted in the future.

“So far we have not been able to help,” she says.

Group keeping is also possible in the new building.

Four of the dog rooms can be combined into two large rooms.

"In the future, we can take in more than ten dogs," explains the Rottacherin, who has headed the animal welfare association since 2014.

New building is much more than a dog house

The new building is much more than a replacement for the old dog house.

During the tour, Ecker-Schotte also shows its own veterinarian's room, an approximately 30 square meter room for training, a room for rabbits and small rodents, a room for chickens and small poultry, and a stable that can also accommodate a horse or a cow.

"We no longer have to panic when we have to get an animal to safety," explains Ecker-Schotte.

Everywhere there are separate runs for the four-legged guests on a temporary basis.

There is currently only one emergency box for dogs

Until the new multi-purpose building is ready, the animal shelter still has to overcome a dry spell.

Dogs can currently not be admitted to the Rottacher animal shelter and must be passed on to friendly animal shelters.

In the event of a real fire, there is an emergency box ready.

So far, reports Ecker-Schotte, the animal welfare association has been able to handle the situation quite well despite the holiday season and the corona effect.

"We would certainly be well staffed if we could take in the animals - but so far we have always found shelter," she says.

Rescue operation: The shelter has numerous cats to look after

For animal shelter manager Markus Glanz and his team, the work continues unabated despite the construction site. In the quarantine station of the cat house, which was completed in 2013, there are currently a number of problem children who need intensive care. The animals come from a rescue operation in July of this year, when the animal welfare association and veterinary office confiscated 123 neglected cats and dogs from private property. According to the gloss, ten boarding cats will be added shortly. There are also numerous birds to look after in the completely full bird room and the aviaries. Keeping the animals as species-appropriate as possible is a matter close to the heart of brilliance, and finding new owners is not always an easy task. "We have a lot of competition from Ebay and other Internet providers," reports the animal shelter manager. Why take an exam when you can order a kitten online? “In doing so,” says Glanz, “an animal shelter should always be empty if possible”.

Request for donations: Animal welfare association still needs furniture

The animal welfare association still needs furniture such as chairs and conference tables to equip the new multi-purpose building.

Anyone who has to give something can contact Johanna Ecker-Schotte by email at vorstand@tierheim-rottach.de.
