Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on Western countries to draw lessons from what is currently happening in Afghanistan and to realize the danger of attempts to impose values from abroad on other peoples.

Lavrov said during a press conference with his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio in Rome today, according to the Russia Today website, "Our colleagues in the West are seeking to search for common solutions, especially to the problem of migration, but lessons must be drawn and it seems after what happened in Iraq, Libya and now in Afghanistan that attempts to impose Values from abroad are very much threatening to explode.”

Lavrov added, "The developments in Afghanistan, especially the bloody terrorist attacks in Kabul yesterday, show an increasing need to expedite the assistance of the Afghans in forming a comprehensive transitional government with the participation of all the major political forces without delay."

Lavrov stressed the importance of ensuring the security of the southern borders of Russia and its allies in Central Asia, noting that issues related to the dangers coming from Afghanistan and helping Afghans to ensure the stability of their country and the work of state institutions in it will take a central place in the consultations of the leaders of the states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Lavrov indicated that Russia is in contact with all parties to the Afghan conflict and is ready to support the agreements concluded by the Americans with the Taliban movement that have not been implemented.

In turn, the Italian Foreign Minister called for action to prevent Afghanistan from turning into a safe haven for terrorists again.

"We are convinced that Moscow is a key player in dealing with the current crisis and reaching a unified international position in the future," Di Maio said, noting that his country is considering convening an extraordinary summit of the Group of Twenty to discuss the Afghan file.
