China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang called on the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to cooperate and dialogue with Syria, stressing the need to respect its concerns and refrain from exerting any political pressure on it.
"China encourages the technical secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to strengthen dialogue with Syria to jointly resolve outstanding issues, and the international community should create favorable conditions for dialogue and cooperation between the two sides and respect Syria's legitimate concerns," Xinhua quoted the Chinese deputy representative as saying during a session of the UN Security Council yesterday. and avoiding political pressure on her.”
Geng also called for a return to the framework of the Chemical Weapons Convention, the obligation of all states parties to protect the authority and integrity of the convention, and that any investigation into incidents of the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria should strictly adhere to the terms of the convention and the verification annex, based on the principles of objectivity, professionalism and impartiality.
Geng reiterated China's consistent position on the illegality of the so-called (investigation and identification team), and said the formation of this team "goes beyond the agreement's mandate. and work together to create favorable conditions and a good climate for the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to resume its normal work.”
And Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Bassam Sabbagh, confirmed yesterday that some Western countries have turned the Security Council into a platform for spreading lies against Syria regarding its cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, stressing that Syria voluntarily joined the embargo agreement and fulfilled, during a record period, all the obligations resulting from this accession. And it no longer possesses any of these weapons, and yet it is subjected to campaigns of false and baseless accusations about cases of alleged use of chemical weapons with the aim of diverting the attention of the international community from the use of these weapons by terrorist organizations and continuing to provide protection and care for them.
