Guinea special forces announced today (Sunday) that they have taken control of the country and announced the repeal of the constitution and the dissolution of the government of President Alpha Conde after heavy exchanges of fire in the capital Conakry this morning. Conde, who recently won a controversial election, was documented as being held by soldiers and the junta assured he was protected.

The leader of the coup is the commander of an elite unit in the army, from Domboia, who had previously served in the French Legion. In a speech on state television, wrapped in a state flag and surrounded by eight other armed soldiers, Domboya said forces plan to form a transitional government and more details will be released later.

He said his forces overthrew the veteran president stemming from "poverty and corruption." He promised to re-draft the constitution together. "Military sources said the president was taken to an unknown location and that the forces under Domboia - described by one source close to him as a calm and restrained man - made further arrests, including senior government officials. For medical treatment.

According to the conspirators, the ministers and the heads of the ousted institutions were invited to a meeting tomorrow morning, and anyone who does not attend will be considered a rebel.

The group calls itself the "Committee for National Unity and Development."

The African Ministry of Defense claimed in the evening that an attack by rebel forces on the presidential palace had been thwarted, but the president no longer seemed to be in control.

It is not clear what his condition is.

Guinea's senior opposition leader Salo Delain Dialo has denied rumors that he is among the detainees.

Conde won a third term in the October election, after changing the constitution that allowed him to run for office again.

Several opposition protesters were killed in riots following the victory of Kunda, who came to power in 2010 after years of opposing the country's dictatorship.

In recent weeks the government has sharply raised taxes to cover budget deficits, increasing fuel prices by 20%.

In the afternoon, after the calm returned to the streets of the capital, some residents went out to celebrate the overthrow of Kunda and congratulated the army forces who passed on the roads.

"Free Guinea, well done," shouted one woman from the balcony of her home.

Throughout the decade of Conde's rule, Guinea has enjoyed steady economic growth thanks to its many minerals, such as diamonds, gold and lead, but few have benefited from it.

Opponents of the government accused it of using criminal laws to silence its critics, while ethnic tensions and much corruption deepened political rivalries.

"While the president has declared everywhere he wants to control differently through the eradication of corruption, the theft of public funds has increased. The new rich have mocked us," said Alsan Diallo, a resident of the capital.

"It all made it easier for the military."

United Nations and United States have condemned the coup in West Africa, a region recently experienced turmoil line. Antonio Gotrs UN Secretary-General said that he strongly condemns "any takeover of power by force" and called for the immediate release of Conde.

United States described the events in Guinea As a "military takeover" and a statement from the Foreign Ministry said that "violence and unconstitutional measures only reduce the chances of peace, stability and prosperity" in Guinea ". "These steps can only limit the ability of the United States and other international partnerships of Guinea to support a country that is navigating its path to national unity and a better future for Guinea citizens."

The Economic Community of West African Nations (ECOWAS) has threatened to impose sanctions on Guinea after its chairman, President of Ghana, described the events as a coup attempt. The African Union has announced an emergency meeting and taking "appropriate steps",While Nigeria’s foreign ministry, the country back in the region, has called for a return to the “constitutional order”.

Alexis Arif, of the U.S. Congressional Research Department, said that while military uprisings and coups are not a new phenomenon in West Africa, the region has suffered "severe damage to democracy" in recent years.

Like Kunda, the Ivory Coast leader also changed the priesthood restrictions so he could continue in office, while Mali experienced two military coups and one Chad.
