A magnitude 5.2 earthquake rocked the province of Khorassan-é Razavi in northeastern Iran on Monday (September 13), the country's seismological center reported.

The earthquake occurred at 8:32 a.m. (4:02 GMT) at a depth of 6 km, near the city of Ghouchan, the Iranian seismological agency said.
It struck several areas in the province including the capital Mashhad, Iran's second city, without the Iranian Red Crescent immediately reporting any casualties or damage.

The rescue teams in the towns of Mashhad, Kalat, Chenaran and Neichabour are on alert,
” adds the Red Crescent.

For its part, the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS) measured a magnitude of 5.1 at a depth of 2 km. Located on the borders of several tectonic plates and crossed by several faults, Iran is an area of strong seismic activity.
