The general election could be very expensive for drivers. It depends on which party prevails in possible government coalitions.

The general election could be very expensive for drivers.

It depends on which party prevails in possible government coalitions.

Munich - What can motorists expect in terms of fuel prices after the federal election *?

Focus Online

has issued various calculations that take into account the election programs of the Union, SPD *, Die Grünen *, FDP and Left as well as the four most promising coalitions of these parties.

The calculations of the online portal initially assume that the decisions of the current government of the CDU * / CSU * and SPD on the CO2 tax will be retained.

Since January 2021, this tax has increased the price of fuel by 25 euros per tonne of CO2, until 2025 the surcharge is to be increased in annual steps to 55 euros per tonne of CO2.

According to ADAC, the first step already increased the E10 price in 2021 by seven cents per liter compared to the end of 2020, and the diesel price by eight cents.

In 2025, drivers would then have to pay 1.64 euros per liter of E10 and 1.48 euros per liter of diesel.

To compensate for the CO2 tax, the tax-reducing commuter allowance for commuters increases from 30 to 35 cents from the 21st kilometer and to 38 cents for the years 2024 to 2028.

Government coalitions with FDP participation: gasoline could cost up to 2.47 euros per liter

In its assessment,

Focus Online

comes to the conclusion that there could be sharp price increases for motorists if the FDP * is involved.

The online portal sees the following government coalitions with the participation of the Liberals as possible.

  • Union / FDP / The Greens

  • Union / SPD / FDP

  • SPD / FPD / The Greens

If the FDP prevails in these coalitions with its demand for an expansion of CO2 emissions trading to include the entire transport sector, the price could be at the upper end of the range of 1.64 to 2.47 euros for E10 and 1.48 to 2.31 Euros for diesel.

If the Union, SPD and the Greens set the tone, the fuel price could be at the lower end of these price ranges.

If the Greens prevail with their demand for the levy to be increased to 60 euros per tonne of CO2 from 2023, the price per liter for E10 should rise to 1.67 euros and for diesel to 1.51 euros.

Possible government coalitions

Price E10

Diesel price

Union / FDP / The Greens

1.64 euros to 2.47 euros

1.48 euros to 2.31 euros

Union / SPD / FDP

1.64 euros to 2.47 euros

1.48 euros to 2.31 euros

SPD / FPD / The Greens

1.67 euros to 2.47 euros

1.51 euros to 2.31 euros

SPD / The Greens / The Left

1.67 euros

1.51 euros

Government coalition without FDP participation: no large price increases foreseeable

With a possible government coalition SPD / Die Grünen / Die Linke *, a prognosis is

almost impossible

according to

Focus Online

.

However, as things stand today, no large surcharges are foreseeable.

With a large uncertainty factor, therefore, only fuel prices of 1.67 euros for Super E10 and 1.51 euros for diesel could be given, since a levy of 60 euros per tonne of CO2 is possible as early as 2023.
