Mikdad, Lamamra, Al-Marar and Guterres discuss coordination on issues of common interest

Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, met in New York with Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and expressed his satisfaction with the priorities set by the latter in his opening speech to the General Assembly, especially the necessity of achieving just peace around the world, bridging the rift between rich and poor countries, equitable distribution of anti-Covid 19 vaccines, and confronting Climate change.

The two sides discussed issues on the agenda of the United Nations and discussed aspects of cooperation between the Syrian government and the United Nations, especially with regard to improving the humanitarian situation in Syria.

Minister Miqdad stressed the need to focus on economic projects and early recovery, pointing to the negative effects of unilateral coercive measures illegally imposed on the Syrian people.

Minister Miqdad called on the United Nations to assume its responsibilities in defending its charter against the violations it is being exposed to, especially the violations of Syrian sovereignty carried out by the United States in northeastern Syria and Turkey in its northwest.

Minister Mikdad and Ramtan Lamamra, Algerian Foreign Minister, also discussed the developments of the situation in both countries and on the Arab arena and ways to enhance cooperation between them in various fields.

The two ministers expressed their satisfaction with the level of cooperation existing between the two countries, stressing their determination to continue to improve bilateral relations to achieve the aspirations of the two brotherly peoples in Syria and Algeria.

Minister Miqdad referred to the respect that Algeria enjoys at the Arab and international levels, and Syria's confidence in the role played by Algeria in bridging the Arab rift and restoring cohesion and solidarity between its countries.

In turn, Minister Lamamra reiterated Algeria's firm position in supporting Syria to preserve its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and to combat terrorism in it.

Minister Miqdad also discussed with Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State in the United Arab Emirates, ways to develop bilateral relations between the two countries to serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples.

Minister Al-Marar presented the priorities that the UAE aspires to work on during its non-permanent membership in the Security Council for the period 2022-2023. Minister Al-Miqdad explained Syria's position on the issues on the Security Council's agenda related to Syria and the importance of coordination between the two countries in this regard.

On the Syrian side, the meetings were attended by Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Bassam Al-Sabbagh, Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Dr. Abdullah Hallaq, Director of the Special Office Department, Qusai Al-Dahhak, Deputy Permanent Representative, and Ihab Hamed from the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
