A degree also lives from personal exchange.

Students want to meet.

That should be possible again in the winter semester.

Mainz / Trier / Koblenz / Landau - The Rhineland-Palatinate universities are to gradually return to normal operations in the winter semester - taking into account the 3G rule (vaccinated, recovered, tested).

An overview of the plans of the universities:

MAINZ

The Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) opens on October 18th. "We are pleased that we will then be able to offer our 30,500 students predominantly face-to-face events on campus and thus, above all, enable our freshmen to get to know each other and personal discourse," emphasizes Chancellor Waltraud Kreutz-Gers. According to current planning, around 4900 of the more than 6000 courses (around 80 percent) will take place in person, especially dates with fewer than 100 participants. Another seven percent are hybrid courses.

Participation in courses and the use of student workstations and service facilities are only possible for those who have been vaccinated, recovered or tested (3G).

A negative PoC antigen test carried out by trained personnel is accepted as evidence of the test.

The university emphasizes that a centrally organized security service checks compliance with the 3G rule in random samples.

In total, JGU expects around 30,500 students for the winter semester 2021/2022.

The number of total enrollments is slightly below the previous year's figure (winter semester 2020/2021: 31,034).

The number of enrollments in the first semester in the winter semesters has leveled off at around 5200 enrollments in recent years.

It will only be clear whether this mark will be reached in 2021/2022 when the last entries and transfers have been made.

KOBLENZ-LANDAU

At the University of Koblenz-Landau, the winter semester 2021/2022 (as of October 12) will begin with 1,755 students - 954 of them in Koblenz and 801 in Landau.

In the previous year there were 2008 students.

According to the current status, 17,408 people will study at the university (9210 in Koblenz and 8198 in Landau).

The semester will mostly take place in attendance.

The exact proportion of hybrid or online events cannot be quantified, but around two thirds take place in or with presence.

Around a third is planned entirely digitally.

The Corona Control Ordinance of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate applies to teaching, which means: The 3G rule applies to all lectures in attendance.

In addition, a distance of 1.5 meters must be maintained for face-to-face events, or a mask must be worn.

The distance can also be maintained by the occupation in the form of a chessboard - that is, the seats in front of and behind as well as to the right and left of the seat remain free.

TRIER

After three semesters under Corona conditions, the University of Trier is returning a long way to normal study life for the winter semester.

"We assume that about four out of five events will take place in person - primarily seminars, exercises, language courses, laboratory internships, in exceptional cases also smaller lectures," said a university spokesman.

Large lectures with more than 60 participants would usually be offered digitally.

More presence in MV's universities: this is how it should work

In the past three semesters, the universities had to experiment a lot because of the corona pandemic in order to offer a good program.

This seems to be a little easier in the new winter semester.

Students return to colleges and universities

With the winter semester, something normal should return to universities and colleges.

After the corona lockdowns and many courses on the Internet, the lecture halls should now be filled with students again.

Nevertheless: "Especially those who have enrolled in the last three semesters, have only seen their fellow students and lecturers so far and have not really enjoyed the campus and student life, will be happy about this development," said the spokesman.

The 3G rule applies at the university, whereby self-tests are not sufficient for participation in classroom teaching.

1455 new students have currently registered for the winter semester 2021/22 (as of October 12).

The number is not final because not all registration procedures have been completed.

Subject changers are not included in the number.

There were 1,601 new students in the 2020/21 winter semester.

The university has a total of 11,520 students.

The courses start on October 25th.
