23% of all road accident victims are over the age of 65 - a disturbing figure in relation to their segment of the population, which stands at 12%.

With 70 fatalities in 2020 from road accidents, the numbers best describe the picture, especially when you consider that the figure refers to a year of closures, in which the older age group did not often go out into the public space.

In 2019, the percentage of injuries was the lowest in the last decade, at 18.8%, but with 747 deaths in the last decade, the trend is clear.

When you focus on the data and analyze the types of vulnerabilities, the picture becomes clearer.

For example, out of those very senior citizens who were injured in accidents, more than half, 411 of them, were killed as pedestrians.

According to the data analysis of the cases of injuries performed by the "Green Light" association, the association focuses on the main risk to the elderly population at the most deadly meeting points between them and the traffic - the crossings.

Erez Kita, CEO of the Green Light Association, describes the senior citizens as "a population at risk, which the state has abandoned in recent years.

"People who rebuilt the country and fought the wars did not survive the war on the road."

The Ministry of Transport and Road Safety and local authorities must show social sensitivity towards the parents of all of us.

In simple and cheap actions, the next death can be prevented. "

In light of the findings of the study, the association will recommend that the government call on local authorities, for which municipal infrastructure is responsible, to make a series of changes and improvements to infrastructure near places where older pedestrians are located, so as to reduce the risk to them.

Among other things, lowering sidewalks and removing obstacles and hazards at pedestrian crossings to prevent pedestrians from tripping, improving visibility and range of sight near crosswalks, reducing traffic, lighting and prominent signage, and in the case of traffic light intersections extending the time at pedestrian traffic. The adults - all of these are steps that can save lives.

Along with those killed as pedestrians, the study notes that 149 senior citizens (who are 20% of all deaths) were found dead while driving and 98 others (13%) as passengers.

These data turn the spotlight on the problematic situation, according to which older drivers who are in a situation where there is a decline in cognitive function continue to drive the vehicle, thereby endangering themselves and the environment.

When do you give up your driver's license?

According to the traffic regulations, over the age of 70, the renewal of the driver's license is conditional on a medical examination once every five years. However, this is performed by a doctor, and reality - a position paper side of IMA - proves that responding to doctors' duty to report to the medical center for Road Safety (Mrb"d) the possible impact on driving ability, not disposed of properly.

Even family members of elderly drivers Sometimes it is difficult or simply avoided to raise the issue with parents and grandparents. In this case, it is recommended to provide family members with information about the functional limitations associated with aging and existing aids so that they can continue to drive as safely as possible. , About the problematic situations they may encounter, and how they should deal with them most safely.

Dr. Kobi Peleg, who participated in the study, noted that the survival of elderly casualties after being injured in road accidents is low, and is the most extreme of all population groups. , A decrease in physical ability and severe mental impact.
