The SPD parliamentary group leader in the Brandenburg state parliament, Erik Stohn, doubts that an early coal phase-out is possible before 2038. In the exploratory paper of the SPD, Greens and FDP for a new federal government, an accelerated coal phase-out is being sought - ideally in 2030 - but this will be linked to requirements, said Stohn.

Potsdam - "For example, the massive expansion of renewable energies, so that the security of supply must be covered by electricity."

The network expansion nationwide is miserable and the expansion of renewable energies is completely inadequate, especially in the south of the republic.

"I have my doubts whether the necessary requirements will be met by 2030," emphasized Stohn on Saturday.

Furthermore, the paper says that electricity must be affordable, said the parliamentary group leader.

There is also a clear commitment to support the affected coal regions in solidarity.

"Here it becomes very clear once again that we need an orderly structural change for the coal phase-out in Lusatia, which includes social perspectives for the people, security of supply with energy (and) affordable electricity."

CDU parliamentary group leader Jan Redmann had vehemently rejected an early coal exit on Friday.

"The planned break in the coal compromise is a slap in the face of the people in Lusatia," emphasized Redmann.

"The planned exit as early as 2030 would be a tough cut for the entire region."

Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) also warned in September that an early coal phase-out could endanger energy security.

"Some are trying to create a quick exit mood here, but keep silent about the fact that we are still far from being able to secure an energy supply from renewable sources for all of Germany," he told the dpa.

Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) is relying on a federal traffic light coalition with a clear focus on climate protection and renewable energies.

"Lower Saxony and the climate would benefit a lot if we finally got ahead with renewable energies," said Weil in an interview with the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung" on Wednesday.

Stohn had announced at the beginning of October that he no longer wanted to run for chairmanship in the election of the parliamentary group executive at the end of the month.

Instead, he wanted to use the talks in Berlin to implement the coal phase-out law for Lusatia with good conditions, he said.
