The Passion Play in 2022 and 2030 should be more climate-friendly.

That is why scientists are accompanying the major event in Oberammergau.

The local council will determine exactly how the project will look on Wednesday evening, October 27, 2021.

Oberammergau

- He traveled by train - from Hanover to Oberammergau. You could say that it is exemplary. And above all in line with the topic that Professor Dr. Harald Zeiss gave a lecture in the local council. The managing director of the Institute for Sustainable Tourism based in Wernigerode, or Inatour for short, should examine which path could be taken to make the Passion Play more climate-friendly in 2030.

At the end of the day, the municipality had not yet decided on a specific course of action, but an opinion was already emerging: climate protection alone is not enough.

You have to invest in sustainability.

However, it costs money to set up a corresponding concept.

We are talking about an amount that is at least in the mid five-digit range, with an upward trend.

Tomorrow evening the Oberammergau municipal council wants to make a decision in its meeting (

see info box below

).

Analysis goes back to the non-party voter community (PWG)

The analysis goes back to the non-party voter community (PWG). In April, the municipal council fully complied with their request to have the vow game 2022 scientifically accompanied from the perspective of climate protection (we reported). A month later, the faction leaders followed the plant management's suggestion to ask Walter Rutz to hire Zeiss. "Since July," said the expert, "I've been on it."

He brought numerous slides with him - peppered with figures, graphics and tables.

Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck would have enjoyed the content.

After all, everything revolved around creating a (more) green passion.

The university professor looked at the production, the theater as well as the travel, accommodation and catering of the guests.

Because the performances about the last days in the life of Jesus depend on several ecological factors.

56 percent of the package guests come by plane

Take the example of mobility. According to the study, 56 percent of the package guests come by plane and spend around eleven days in Germany, but only briefly in the Kofel village. "Oberammergau is only responsible for 1.5 days," said the specialist. But it doesn't change the fact that air traffic accounts for over 90 percent of CO2 emissions. “That's no surprise,” emphasized the expert. "If an event is internationally known, it also attracts international guests." Comparable to a football World Cup or Olympic Games.

This is precisely what is difficult to regulate, given the large number of guests from the USA and Asia.

Zeiss expects that the flight prices will rise and thus the overall package will be more expensive.

With the result that demand may decrease.

There are more opportunities to influence the European market.

With specifications in the packages, for example taking the train.

If you want to save CO2, you can start with your diet.

According to Zeiss, it is responsible for 20 percent of emissions.

To reduce this value, “there are levers for that”.

Use organic products, use regional and seasonal foods.

Water, electricity, garbage, materials - something can be done anywhere.

Sales, sewing, etc. should be examined more closely.

The municipal council has four options for action to choose from

Zeiss presented four options for action. Number one includes the path to the climate-friendly Passion 2022. The cost: 33,000 euros. Which is actually obsolete because most of the contracts have already been signed and important preparations have been made. Variant two is about climate-neutral games by 2030. This would cost around 75,000 euros. With option three, the topic of sustainability is already addressed for 2022 (66,000 euros), while the fourth option is aimed at sustainable games in 2030 (188,000 euros). Either way, Zeiss advised: "Start quickly." There is financial support through grants. Basically, the tourism expert was confident - even in terms of sustainability, the more difficult undertaking. “You have a lot of individual topics,” he emphasized. "But nothing that is unsolvable."

The preferences of the municipal councils became clear relatively quickly.

Without having gone into it more thoroughly, they aimed at option three.

As a first step, so to speak, on which one could build.

In addition to data acquisition and

evaluation, it also includes workshops, recommendations for action and presentations.

The parliamentary group spokesmen broke the ground for sustainability.

“We have to rely on that,” emphasized Katharina Floßmann (Bunte Liste).

"We refer to 400 years of history, there we have an obligation for the next generations."
