Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed last night (Tuesday) to a ceasefire on their border after the worst fighting between them since the end of the war a year ago, after Russia's mediation efforts.
Armenia has asked Moscow to defend it in the wake of the clashes, in which 15 soldiers were killed and 12 were captured by Azeri officials. In addition, the Armenian Ministry of Defense noted that the army lost two outposts at the border. "In accordance with the Russia-mediated agreement, the fire in the eastern sector of the Armenian-Azeri border has been stopped, and the situation is relatively stable," the Armenian Defense Ministry said.
Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry said it was responding to widespread "provocations" after Armenian forces shelled positions of the Azeri army, and that its operation was successful.
Earlier yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Faschian spoke by phone about the situation at the border. In addition, Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu spoke by telephone with Armenian and Azerbaijani defense ministers.
The French Foreign Ministry said Paris was very concerned about the situation and called on both countries to respect the ceasefire, which was reached after a 44-day war between the Azerbaijani army and Armenian separatist forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, in which at least 6,500 people were killed.
This conflict ended after Russia, which has a military base in Armenia, mediated between the parties and deployed nearly 2,000 peacekeepers in the region.
Turkey has taken the side of Azerbaijan, which has regained territories it lost in a previous war in the early 1990s.
