Abstract.

Joséphine Baker was born on June 3, 1906, to a poor family in the southern United States.

When she was little, she did housework to help her family financially.

Passionate about dance, she tried her luck on Broadway in the early 1920s and was spotted by a producer in 1925.

She then crosses the Atlantic to dance in the “Revue Nègre”, a Parisian show featuring African-American artists.

Her performance was noticed and in 1926, she launched herself at the Folies Bergères.

Joséphine Baker becomes an icon: Parisiennes copy her hairstyle and she is the muse of famous artists.

When the Second World War was declared, this artist joined the resistance and took part in spy missions for the Allies.

After the war, she adopted, with her fourth husband, 12 children from all over the world and settled her family in the Château des Milandes in the Dordogne.

In the 1960s, Josephine Baker was ruined, and in 1975, she died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

20,000 people will follow his funeral procession in the streets of Paris.
