An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit the Izu Islands in eastern Japan today.

According to the US Geological Survey, the tremor struck at a depth of 7.86 km above the Earth's surface.

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the same islands earlier this week, without causing any casualties.

Japan is classified among the countries prone to earthquakes and frequent earthquakes because it is located on the first seismic line and in the Pacific Ring of Fire region.
