OAS calls on Nicaragua to release political prisoners

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) approved this Wednesday a new resolution on Nicaragua, which concludes that the country "is not complying with the commitments of the Inter-American Democratic Charter" and urges it to "As a matter of urgency and as a first measure, release all political prisoners."

The resolution was approved with the favorable vote of 25 foreign ministers, 1 against and 8 abstentions during an extraordinary virtual session.

More than 150 opponents, including more than 40 leaders and 7 former presidential candidates, continue to be detained and most of them face trials for treason, money laundering, among others, charges that are rejected by their defenders and family members.

The OAS Permanent Council asked Nicaragua to accept a mission of good offices to reach an agreement that would lead to comprehensive electoral reforms.

In the resolution, the Permanent Council calls for the repeal of all laws that restrict political participation and human rights, it also proposes resuming the dialogue between political parties and other actors "in order to organize free, impartial presidential and early parliamentary elections. and transparent and with credible international observation ".

On November 19, his foreign minister, Denis Moncada, reported that the country denounced the Democratic Charter and began the process of withdrawing that body, because he considers that the OAS repeatedly interferes in the internal affairs of Nicaragua.

On November 12, the Permanent Council of the OAS, through a resolution, declared the elections of November 7 illegitimate, which gave the victory to the president and candidate for reelection, Daniel Ortega, with more than 75% of the votes.
