International organizations condemned the murder of the Honduran trans activist and human rights defender Thalía Rodríguez, an event that occurred on Tuesday, January 11, in Tegucigalpa.
In a tweet published this Thursday, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) asked the State to investigate "in a serious and impartial manner", as well as "implement measures to guarantee the life and personal integrity of trans women".
In statements to Televicentro, a CNN affiliate, the police director of Investigations, Rommel Martínez, said this Thursday that “from the first moment” this event occurred, a team dedicated to the case has been deployed.
"We have a line of investigation, despite the fact that it is a recent case and the investigators are moving along that axis precisely to provide an answer and not allow this to be a case of impunity," said Martínez.
For its part, the Office in Honduras of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) warned in a statement published on Wednesday that trans women face "serious risks that are aggravated by the violence against them."
According to the Oacnudh, Rodríguez carried out his work in different organizations such as the Kukulcán Association, Cattrachas, Colectivo Violeta and Cozumel Trans, among others.
There she developed "awareness of human rights, leading self-support groups and promoting employment alternatives for trans women other than sex work."
The Oacnudh added that, in 2021, the Red Lésbica Cattrachas organization recorded 28 murders of members of the LGBTI+ community.
In addition, they detail that Rodríguez is the second human rights defender to be killed in the first 10 days of the year.
