Former Hong Kong member Huang Zhifeng and former Kwun Tong District Councillor Leung Kai-ching were accused of participating in the June 4 rally in 2020. The two admitted knowingly participating in an unauthorized assembly and were sentenced to October and four months in prison respectively.

They all appealed their sentences. The Court of Appeal dismissed Liang Kaiqing's appeal after hearing submissions today (19th), but granted Huang Zhifeng's commutation of two to eight months. 27.5 months, which was reduced to 23.5 months. He is expected to serve all his sentences in March this year, but he has not been granted bail since he was involved in the primary election case.

Huang is now serving prison terms for 3 cases

Huang Zhifeng was sentenced to 13.5 months in prison for the case of besieging the police chief on June 21, 2019. He was also sentenced to 4 months in prison for participating in an unauthorized assembly and violating the masking law on 10.5 of the same year.

District Court Judge Chen Guangchi sentenced him to 10 months in prison for the June 4 rally case, which was to be executed in instalments compared to the previous two cases. The total sentence for the three cases is therefore 27.5 months.

Both Huang Zhifeng and Liang Kaiqing appealed the sentence, but only Huang was allowed to commute.

Huang was expelled for being involved in the primary election case

The Court of Appeal today approved Huang's appeal against the June 4 rally case. The sentence in the case was reduced from the original 10 months to 8 months, of which the 6-month sentence will be executed in installments with other cases.

The total sentence for the three cases was also reduced to 23.5 months.

If Huang Zhifeng completes the sentences in the three cases, he can be released from prison in March this year, but Huang was also returned for his involvement in the primary election case.

Liang Kaiqing's appeal against sentence was dismissed

As for Liang Kaiqing, who was sentenced to 4 months in prison, she was released from prison in July last year. She did not appear in court today and her appeal was dismissed on the same day.

The judge said that a judgment will be issued in the future to explain the reasons.

The barrister representing Huang Zhifeng and Liang Kaiqing stated in his speech today that he believes that the sentence in this case is too severe, and believes that even considering factors such as Huang Zhifeng committing the case while on bail, the starting point for sentencing should be 11 months, and the original judge decided to use 15 months. As a starting point for sentencing, it is considered inappropriate.
