Sad news: Ash trees have to be felled over a large area on Rottach-Damm.

A fungus has infested the trees.

work begins on Thursday.

Update from January 19th:

As the municipality of Rottach-Egern reports, the felling work will begin on Thursday, January 20th.

The press release states: The campaign will take a total of about one to two weeks, including the clean-up work.

For safety reasons, the north-facing or south-facing Dammweg, from the Birkenmoos bridge to the Kalkofenbrücke, must then be closed alternately.

In case of particular danger, both dam routes are affected by the closure.

After the end of work in the evening until the morning, the barriers are lifted, which means that the paths are accessible.

The municipality of Rottach-Egern asks the residents, all pedestrians and cyclists to understand and observe the closure in order to avoid the risk of accidents.

Original report from December 22nd:

Rottach-Egern

– Mayor Christian Köck (CSU) delivered the bad news at the recent municipal council meeting in the Seeforum. "The ash fungus is rampant," he said. "It infested 150 trees on Rottach-Damm, and they now have to be felled for safety reasons." The district office considers the measure to be essential so that the fungus does not spread further.

The fungus Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus, which was imported from East Asia, causes ash dieback or ash wilt.

Since this serious tree disease was first detected in Poland in 1992, it has been on the rise across Europe.

The cause of the ash dieback, also known as the "false white stem cup", has meanwhile established itself in 22 countries in Northern, Eastern and Central Europe and can also be found in Bavaria in the ash stands across the board.

Since its first detection in Germany in 2007 and in Bavaria in 2008, negative disease development in ash stands of all ages has become increasingly visible.

Signs of infestation include wilting, bark discoloration, leaf spot and changes in crown branching structure.

Fungal infestation on the ash trees on the Rottach: Weissachdamm has also been affected

For example, ash trees on Weissachdamm in Kreuth have already fallen victim to the tree epidemic.

They had to be felled.

150 ash trees on Rottach-Damm are now showing symptoms and must be removed by February 28th.

"Then the breeding of birds begins," explained Köck.

The Rottacher building yard could not do the work alone, he emphasized.

In view of the short period of time available for the felling, the community has therefore secured external help.

This will start right away in the new year.

“These trees are sick.

You are doomed to die.

And we really don't like doing this clear cut," added the mayor sadly.

But in the coming year, together with the water management office, measures will be considered that can compensate for the clear-cutting.
