Political France has a complex vis-à-vis European construction. It is at the origin of this strategic rupture which saved it from decline after the Second World War. Eight presidents and fifteen legislatures since 1958 have confirmed our European commitment. The French have embraced it to the point of forcing extremists to tone down their criticism of it. However, at each election, some people try to revive a debate that has now been wisely settled: in reality, the European Union is neither a state nor an empire, it is the reasoned alliance of sovereign nations who decide to pool some of their prerogatives to be more effective in the service of their citizens. But the euro and the European Central Bank, acclaimed, represent the most federal dimension of this whole.
