With the aim of creating a competitive economy based on knowledge and raising the level of efficiency and effectiveness in protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights in line with global changes and agreements and treaties to which Syria has acceded, the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection held a workshop today on the national strategy for intellectual property at Al-Assad Library in Damascus.
The topics of the two-day workshop focus on giving an overview of the work of the Directorate of Commercial and Industrial Property Protection in the Ministry and introducing the national strategy for intellectual property and its economic importance and the methodology of the World Intellectual Property Organization “WIPO” in preparing intellectual property strategies and encouraging creativity, invention and small and medium enterprises to reach a timetable for implementation In the field of copyright and other rights.
The Assistant Minister of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection, Eng. Rasha Kirkuki, indicated in her speech the importance of the workshop in establishing the beginning of work for the preparation of the national strategy for intellectual property by defining its importance and role and defining the coordinated framework for its status and operational steps through cooperation between the various stakeholders.
Kirkuki indicated that a group of global conventions and treaties in the field of intellectual property and international conventions related to the international registration of patents have been joined. The registration of industrial and commercial property rights has also been facilitated through a national office that provides effective services and the signing of an agreement to establish the National Center for Intellectual Property Training with the World Organization ip last week.
Director of Commercial and Industrial Property Protection at the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection, Dr. Shafiq Al-Azab, explained that the aim of the workshop was to define the objectives of the strategy, set the time frame for it, determine the role that each party will play, and be informed of the latest global developments in this field, leading to the development of a general policy for the strategy of intellectual property protection. in Syria, laying down the basic rules for it, and reviewing previous laws in order to develop and modernize them to keep pace with the current stage.
Dr. at the Faculty of Law, Damascus University, Muhammad Youssef said that the workshop is important in taking accelerated steps in this field, as there is a shift from the framework of physical property to intellectual property in a large number of countries in the world, pointing to the endeavor to unify laws in the field of intellectual property within the framework of one law.
Mr. Yasser Saadeh, the lecturer in the workshop, made it clear that it is important to introduce the strategy and how it is implemented in countries around the world.
A number of representatives of ministries, authorities, popular organizations and heads of private and public universities will participate in the workshop.
