Update from March 9, 2:53 p.m.

– According to calculations by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), the US oil embargo against Russia* has only minor economic effects on Russia.

"The import ban on Russian oil by the USA may be of great symbolic importance, but it practically does not cause any economic damage to the Russian economy," said IfW trade researcher Hendrik Mahlkow on Wednesday.

The embargo will lead to a long-term loss of 0.2 percent of Russia's economic power.

The reason for the small impact is that the US buys little Russian oil.

On the other hand, the situation would change if the EU also decided to impose an embargo on Russian oil.

According to IfW calculations, Russia's gross domestic product would then fall by 1.2 percent in the long term.

Update from March 9, 1:25 p.m.

– The Chernobyl nuclear ruins have been cut off from the power grid in the course of the ongoing fighting in Ukraine *.

The electricity supply to the plant and its security systems was completely cut off as a result of "the military activities of the Russian occupiers," said the Ukrainian energy company Ukrenergo on Wednesday about the status of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Because of the ongoing Russian attacks, there is "no way" to restore the power supply in Chernobyl today.

Ukraine War: Nuclear workers trapped at Chernobyl site

In 1986, a devastating accident occurred in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, in which hundreds of people died and radioactive material spread across Europe.

The Russian army had captured the terrain in northern Ukraine on the first day of its invasion.

More than 200 technical workers and security guards have since been trapped at the site.

You have now been working for almost two weeks at a time without being relieved.

Typically, more than 2,000 people work in rotating shifts in the restricted area.

Ukraine war: fuel prices record record increases – diesel 12 cents more expensive overnight

First report from March 9, 1:15 p.m.

– While Russia is said to be about to lose control of the airspace in the Ukraine war* and Chancellor Scholz is again making an appeal to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin*, fuel prices in Germany are rising at an unprecedented speed.

In just one week, diesel has become 39.4 cents more expensive, as the ADAC announced on Wednesday.

In the nationwide daily average on Tuesday, the fuel price madness due to the Ukraine war reached a new high*.

The fuel cost 2,150 euros per liter.

Super E10 increased by 27.6 cents to 2.103 euros on a weekly basis.

From Monday to Tuesday alone, diesel had increased by twelve and E10 and around ten cents.

And although Russia is bringing a possible Ukraine change of course* into play, the end of the fuel price has apparently not yet been reached: the next strong increase was already evident on Wednesday.

At noon, diesel was eleven cents and Super E10 eight cents higher than the previous day's comparison time.

"The current development on the oil market does not actually allow for this further increase," said ADAC.
