Former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin wants to return to the national political stage: The 58-year-old announced that she is running for a Republican nomination for a seat in the US House of Representatives.

The Alaska Board of Elections listed Palin as one of 51 candidates after the application deadline.

The seat had become vacant following the death of longtime MP Don Young (88).

"America is at a tipping point," Palin wrote in her statement.

In it she accuses the "extreme left" of destroying the United States.

"I am in this race to win and take up the fight for freedom alongside other patriots who are willing to sacrifice anything to save our country," writes Palin.

Return of the loser

The pugnacious conservative was governor of the state of Alaska from 2006 to 2009 and later ran for the post of vice president alongside Republican John McCain.

During the election campaign, however, she was repeatedly the target of media ridicule.

Among other things, Palin had claimed that she could see Russia from her home in Alaska.

When a journalist asked which newspapers she reads, she could not name a single medium.

McCain and Palin ultimately lost the election to Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

In recent years, Palin has been best known for her sensational television appearances.

For example, she took part in the American offshoot of »The Masked Singer«, for which she had herself put into a bear costume.

Until 2013 she was a commentator for the arch-conservative broadcaster Fox News.

Vaccinate?

"Over my corpse!"

Palin last made headlines in January when she was spotted in a New York restaurant after several positive corona tests.

Previously, she had vociferously refused to be vaccinated - "only over my dead body," she said at an event organized by the right-wing populist organization Turning Point USA.

The Alaska primary is on June 11th.

The four candidates with the most votes then compete for the seat in the House of Representatives in Washington in the August 16 by-election necessitated by Young's death.
