MUNICH – On May 9th, Russia will celebrate the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany with a military parade on Red Square in Moscow – this year May 9th will also be “Victory Day” over Ukraine.

Experts are of the opinion that Vladimir Putin* wants to show military successes in Ukraine by the symbolic date.

"We believe that May 9 is an important date for the Kremlin," confirmed a Western official.

For Ukraine, that means the brutality of the war could increase further over the next month.

One indication of this is the appointment of a new commander for the Ukraine war*.

Statements by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov also do not bode well.

In 2016, he was named a "Hero of Russia" by President Vladimir Putin, one of the country's highest honors.

Most recently, Dwornikov, who had also fought in the Chechen war, was commander in Russia's southern military district.

According to experts, however, Dvornikov's appointment is also a sign that the Kremlin, contrary to its official statements, is dissatisfied with the course of the war so far.

According to the US Department of Defense, the appointment should lead to better coordination of the Russian attack.

So far, Moscow has not had a military leader in charge of the entire invasion of Ukraine, US Department officials told CNN.

Each unit from different military districts acted without coordination and an overarching strategy – that is apparently about to change.

Meanwhile, the ruler of the Russian republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, is living up to his reputation as "Putin's bloodhound" with new threats: "There will be an offensive - not only on Mariupol, but also on other places, towns and villages," he says in a video that was published on Telegram on Monday night.

First Luhansk and Donetsk will be "completely liberated", then Kyiv* and all other cities will be taken.

With Kadyrov's help and thanks to the support of his father, Akhmad Kadyrov, who was killed in a terrorist attack in 2004, Putin won the Chechen war.

Father and son have created a mafia structure with brutal terror against the opposition in the autonomous Caucasus republic.

The Chechen is said to be responsible for failed assassination attempts on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj*.

Kadyrov is now trying to take the southern Ukrainian port of Mariupol with his dreaded troops, where the nationalist Azov Brigades* are also fighting on the Ukrainian side.

The battle there is correspondingly bloody and merciless: According to pro-Russian forces, at least 5,000 civilians were killed in Mariupol alone, and Zelensky assumes tens of thousands of victims.

The Ukrainian armed forces said they were preparing for a "final battle" for the city yesterday.

"Today will probably be the last battle as ammunition is running low," the 36th Marine Brigade said on Facebook.

The soldiers were "pushed back" and "surrounded" by the Russian army.
