President Joe Biden will speak by phone this Friday afternoon with the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on a variety of topics, including how countries will coordinate to respond when it is expected that Title 42, the public health immigration policy, will be lifted later next month.
“The leaders will also discuss how to manage unprecedented migration flows.
Given our shared border, we must do this together and as a region.
We have been working closely with Mexico to manage, mitigate and reduce irregular migration, especially as we plan together to end the use of Title 42 authority at the end of May," a senior administration official told reporters before the leaders' summit, which will be closed to the press.

The official continued: “This is something we hope our leaders will discuss further today.
Mexico has also been a true leader in the regional response, and we are grateful for that.
We have a shared interest in mobilizing a hemispheric response to the historical flows that we are seeing.”
The senior official said the United States hopes to lean on its relationship with Mexico to respond to a possible surge in migrants beginning May 23, when the policy is rescinded.
“We will really need to rely on our partnership more than ever to have a coordinated response, increase staff and additional resources on both sides of our border to make sure we have an orderly and humane response,” the official said.

Biden and López Obrador are also expected to discuss climate change, inequality and the security causes of migration patterns during their call this Friday, a second senior administration official said.

And the leaders are also expected to discuss migration in more detail at the Summit of the Americas, which takes place in California in June, days after the policy is expected to be lifted.
