Herborn/Giessen - A 78-year-old was hit by a freight train near Herborn on Tuesday (May 10) and was seriously injured.
According to testimonies, the man went to the track area at Herborn station "without reason", as the federal police say.
Apparently he had noticed a freight train coming from Giessen too late.
The man tried at the last moment to leave the track area.
But without success.
At almost 110 km/h, a footboard on the train crashed into the 78-year-old.
The man sustained serious injuries in the collision.
He was taken to Gießen University Hospital by rescue helicopter.

Herborn station was completely closed from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. due to the incident.
As a result, seven trains were delayed by almost an hour each.
The Federal Police Inspectorate in Kassel has started the investigation.
