Putin is preparing for a protracted conflict, says US intelligence director
Ukrainian soldiers trapped in the Azovstal steel plant say there was heavy shelling overnight and for a time they lost contact with the field hospital at the complex in Mariupol.
The deputy commander of the Azov Regiment, Capt. Svyatoslav Palamar, said the shelling had lasted all night and had included Russian planes.
"There are injuries, many are seriously injured," he said, adding that they needed immediate evacuation.
Kateryna Polishchuk, one of the soldiers trapped in the steel plant, posted a defiant message on Facebook saying that the defenders of the plant will fight to the end.
