On the steps of Matignon, the new Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne affirmed in her first speech that "nothing should slow down the fight for the place of women in our society".


New presidential term, new prime minister.

After a long wait, Jean Castex finally submitted his resignation to Emmanuel Macron this Monday, May 16, more than three weeks after the re-election of the head of state.

It is Elisabeth Borne, Minister of Labor in the Castex government since 2020, who succeeds him.

The last rays of the day still crossed the courtyard of the Hôtel de Matignon, while the former mayor of Prades passed the torch to Elisabeth Borne.

Going up the stairs side by side after a first handshake and a hug, the two tenants of Matignon, one entering, the other leaving, spoke in private for a few minutes.

They then each delivered a short speech.

Before starting his, Jean Castex was greeted with numerous applause.

Echoing Emmanuel Macron's promise between the two rounds to appoint Prime Minister directly in charge of the ecological transition, Élisabeth Borne specifies that on the "

climate and ecological challenge

", it will be necessary to "

act faster and stronger

involving more the living forces of our territories

».

At the conclusion of her speech, the Prime Minister mentions the first woman appointed to Matignon before her, Edith Cresson between 1991 and 1992, for whom she has "

a thought

".

First woman in this position for thirty years, Elisabeth Borne has already received the congratulations of many political figures, such as Valérie Pécresse or even Catherine Vautrin, herself approached for a time for this position.

If she were to lose this election, she could have to leave Matignon.

In 2017, however, this constituency was won by more than 68% by the LREM candidate, Alain Tourret.

By June 12 and 19, it remains for the Prime Minister to make herself known, and loved, by the French.

As for Jean Castex, he says he is now ready to take “

a step aside, leaving national politics
