The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today the expulsion of 34 French and 24 Italian diplomats, in response to similar measures taken by Paris and Rome against Russian diplomats.

The TASS news agency reported that the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the French ambassador in Moscow, Pierre Levy, to inform him of its response to Paris' expulsion of a number of Russian diplomats last April.

The Russian Foreign Ministry asked the French diplomats to leave Russia within two weeks from the date of handing over the relevant note to the French ambassador.

At the beginning of last April, Paris declared 41 Russian diplomats in France "persona non grata".

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Italian ambassador to Moscow, Giorgio Staras, and informed him of its decision to expel 24 Italian diplomats.

This decision came as a response to Rome's declaration at the beginning of last month that 30 Russian diplomats were "persona non grata."
