A savings bank branch has been cordoned off by the police after an ATM was blown up.

After an ATM was blown up in the Ruhr area, shots were fired - apparently by both the suspects and the police.

According to Interior Minister Reul, the fact that the officials were on site quickly is due to a new concept.

Castrop-Rauxel - After an ATM in Castrop-Rauxel was blown up, a suspect was injured by a shot from a police gun, according to initial findings.

The German press agency learned this from investigators.

The police therefore assume that the suspects also fired.

Initially, however, only shell casings from service weapons were found.

That could be because the suspected machine gunners had a revolver—a gun like that doesn't spit out shells.

As the dpa learned, the suspect's escape vehicle was found.

It is now being examined for traces.

After a police witness reported a detonation early Thursday morning, a patrol car drove to the Sparkasse branch and discovered three suspects there, the police said in the morning.

“Several shots were fired as the incident progressed.” One suspect was injured, but the police officers were not injured.

The injured man was arrested on the spot in the Ruhr area city and taken to a hospital.

There was no danger to life.

The other two suspects fled in a car that was later found.

Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) told dpa on Thursday: "Since February, every available patrol car has been on the street at night, close to the ATMs.

This is a building block in our fight against the sprinklers - and it is bearing fruit: last night the police were on the spot incredibly quickly and caught the suspects in the act.

We also have the getaway vehicle and are now taking a close look at it.”
