Zhang Renliang, chairman of the TAC, pointed out that while the tram company has inherited the historical value of trams, it has implemented a series of improvement projects and introduced innovative measures to enhance tram services and provide passengers with a safer and more comfortable journey.

The TAC understands that the fierce competition in tram services, coupled with the epidemic and related social distancing measures, has resulted in a significant decrease in tram ridership and revenue, and a severe operating environment.

In discussing the fare increase application, the TAC has considered and balanced all relevant factors, including the latest operational and financial situation of the tram company, improvement projects implemented and public acceptance.

Zhang Renliang continued that, like other fare increase applications, the TAC will submit comments to the Government on the tram fare increase application for consideration by the Chief Executive in Council.

TAC members met today and listened to the government's briefing on the existing franchises of Long Win Bus, Citybus (airport and North Lantau bus network franchises) and NWFB, the arrangements after the expiry of 2023, and the latest discussions between the government and the bus companies Condition.

Zhang Yanliang said that the TAC is aware that the negotiations between the government and the bus companies are progressing well, and that the franchised bus companies can continue to provide high-quality public bus services to the public and develop a sustainable bus service network under the new 10-year franchise.

The TAC is also pleased to learn that the relevant bus companies have agreed to adopt new franchise terms and commitments under the new franchise despite the difficult operating environment, so as to further enhance service quality and bus safety.

The TAC will make recommendations in due course.
