Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny has been transferred from the penal colony where he was serving his sentence to a higher security prison, his lawyer told CNN on Tuesday.
Although the transfer is in line with the judge's orders under the ruling issued in March, his legal team said the jailed politician's current whereabouts are unknown.

"He was transferred to a maximum security prison when his sentence [in the new criminal case] came into effect, but we don't know which one," Olga Mikhailova said.
"We don't know where he is exactly."
"We will continue to search for him," Mikhailova added.
In March, a Moscow court sentenced Navalny to another nine years in a maximum-security prison.
He was sentenced on charges of fraud by Moscow's Lefortovo court on charges of stealing from the Anti-Corruption Foundation from him.
CNN has contacted the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) for comment.
A lawyer for the Kremlin critic was told he was no longer in the Pokrov city prison when he visited his client early Tuesday.

"Navalny has disappeared from the Pokrov penal colony. He did not show up for the meeting with his lawyers today. We have no further information about where Navalny has been taken," said his aide and head of the Navalny Investigation Department, Maria Pevchikh. , in a tweet.

Neither the family nor the lawyers were informed of his transfer, Navalny's spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, also said on Tuesday.
According to the Russian state news agency TASS citing Sergey Yazhan, chairman of the regional public supervision commission, Alexey Navalny was transferred to a maximum security prison in Melekhovo, in the Vladimir region.
Yazhan told TASS on Tuesday that Navalny is already in prison.
Navalny's spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, said on Twitter that they have no confirmation that Navalny has been transferred to Melekhovo prison, despite media reports.
Lyudmila Romanova, commissioner for human rights in the Vladimir region, told TASS on Tuesday that the prison has a good reputation.
