The cherry picking season continues in As-Suwayda Governorate, bringing with it the farmers with the hope of abundant production that will provide them with a source of income to help them with the burdens and requirements of life.
The harvest season, which is usually concentrated during the month of June, includes many rural areas in the governorate, especially the higher ones, the most important of which are Dahr al-Jabal, Miamas, Qanawat, Mufa’ila, Kufr, Sahwat al-Khidr and others.
During a tour by SANA reporter to one of the production areas in Dahr El-Jabal, a number of farmers, including Khaled Obaid and Osama Abu Hamdan, talked about the importance of this tree, which gives high productivity and is often endurable alongside apple trees and does not require high costs. The farmers demanded help in marketing their crop at the right price Because many of them are subject to price control by traders.
According to the merchant, Muhammad Abdullah, he used to work in this field annually, as he worked to guarantee 4 orchards in Dahr al-Jabal and al-Kafr sites during the current season, with a workshop of 8 workers picking and classifying cherries to be marketed to Damascus.
Meanwhile, Salam Halawa, the official of one of the cherry picking workshops, stated that she employs about 50 workers to work in the harvest season in the Dahr-al-Jabal, Miamas and Kafr regions, which provides them with a job opportunity and seasonal financial income.
In turn, the agricultural engineer Sami Ashti of the support counseling unit in the Dahr al-Jabal area of the Directorate of Agriculture explained that the areas planted with cherries in As-Suwayda governorate amount to 3360 dunums, containing more than a thousand trees, and most of them are planted with rainfed, except for a few areas that do not exceed 30 dunums that are planted irrigated, indicating the availability of environmental conditions. Suitable for cultivation in terms of cold hours during the winter season, moderate summer and solar brightness, indicating that the production for the current season is good and is estimated at 1050 tons.
He added that cherries are a clean product, free of pesticides, and the agricultural services provided to it are simple and do not require high costs. It also contributes to providing many job opportunities for its workers, indicating that the marketing period is short and is limited to two months because it is not stored for long periods, noting that the directorate works annually to provide seedlings. For those who want to grow it at reasonable prices.
