When you're a student, some cities are more attractive than others.
The QS ranking aims to determine the advantages (and disadvantages) of 140 cities around the world and to observe them in terms of affordability, quality of life, level of universities and opinions of former students who studied in this destination.
For France, Paris, Lyon and Toulouse have been part of the ranking for several years, Montpellier has just entered it.
To be included, the population must be at least 250,000 and have at least two universities in the city ranked in the QS World University Rankings.
France is improving
Thanks to the scores of the four French cities, the score climbs: the mix - which measures the diversity and size of the student population - and the desirability are on the rise.
+9 points for this last criterion for the three French cities already present in the ranking.
In contrast, student voice and affordability are declining, an observation that is not specific to France.
"This last point being representative of the trend observed in student cities around the world", specifies the ranking.
Paris is progressing, Montpellier is the most affordable
Paris remains an “extremely attractive destination for potential students”.
With a score of 92.6/100 for desirability, it ranks fifth in the world on this score.
A score it also gets for employer activity, which measures employers' search for a graduate student in that city.

In the ranking of universities, Paris climbs to 8th place worldwide, a good point for the general ranking of the best student cities.
Black point on the other hand for the measurement of student opinion and the decline it displays - qualified thanks to the feedback of 98,000 students on their study experience in a city.
Lyon, ranked 45th in the world, scores well in terms of student diversity and financial accessibility.
Montpellier, for its part, entered the rankings with a score that gave it 35th place in the world for the most affordable cities.
Toulouse meanwhile gains 8 places.
And elsewhere ?
Cities are becoming less affordable for students overall.
London, which has occupied the first place for four years, Seoul and Munich prance at the top of the ranking.
Boston, with its 11th place, is the highest ranked student city in the United States.
And Montreal leaves the top 10 in favor of Edinburgh (10th) and passes 14th.
Berlin is 6th.
