Official award as Fairtrade Town - 794th city in Germany

Dachau - Now it's official: Dachau is a "Fairtrade Town" - the 794th Fairtrade town in Germany, the 224th in Bavaria.

"As of today you are playing in the Champions League with Rome, Amsterdam and London," emphasized Manfred Holz, founding member of "Trans Fair" and honorary ambassador of "Fairtrade" at the award ceremony in the Ludwig-Thoma-Haus.

In his witty speech peppered with numerous puns, he praised the commitment of the steering group in Dachau, which made the award possible in the first place.

Holz encouraged those present to pay more attention to the Fairtrade seal when shopping and to make others aware of it as well.

“Buying is an ethical attitude,” emphasized Holz.

The fact that Dachau is now officially allowed to bear the seal is mainly thanks to the so-called steering group around Brigitte Hinterscheid.

All speakers praised their great commitment, but Hinterscheid himself did not want to let the hymns of praise sung for her stand.

"The idea came from the store, not from me," emphasized the former teacher.

The "shop" is the "fair world shop" in the old town of Dachau, where a team of committed women ensures that the people of Dachau can buy fair trade products.

They are supported by the Bavarian Fair Trade House in Amperpettenbach.

Markus Raschke, the chairman of the fair trade house, came to the Thoma house to congratulate.

He has been in charge of the business for 21 years and was involved in founding the shop in the old town of Dachau in 2015.

The fact that there is still room for improvement when it comes to fair trade was not only emphasized by Manfred Holz, who called for "buying organic, fair, regional and seasonal".

Germans spend just under 25 euros a year on fair trade products, and above all on coffee, reports Raschke.

The steering group around Brigitte Hinterscheid wants to ensure that things change.

Numerous restaurateurs and shops are already on board, and there will be many more in the future.

Hinterscheid has managed to get many organisations, banks, associations and politicians from Dachau on board.

Bund Naturschutz, Dachauer Land, BRK, Caritas, representatives of the Dachau economy, the Dachau Forum and many more supported the idea of fair trade.

The city of Dachau has its “own” fair coffee and fair chocolate.

The coffee has been around for 20 years.

The packaging recently received a new label chosen in a competition (we reported).

Mayor Florian Hartmann was also behind the application from the start and was proud of the seal.

He also called on the people of Dachau to act even more actively and to buy more fairly.

"For more than two thirds of people in Germany, sustainability still plays no role when shopping," Hartmann regrets.

Only by buying fairly traded products can one help ensure that "people in distant countries are not exploited, but receive a fair wage for their work and a fair price for their products."

The deputy district administrator Marianne Klaffki and Petershausen's mayor Marcel Fath also congratulated.

Fath thanked for the "fair neighborhood" because Petershausen has been a fair trade community since 2015.

He himself now gets a "headache" from coffee that does not come from fair trade, said Fath.

The award ceremony was accompanied by the highest level of music from the Dachau boys' band.
