The drought in Franconia causes the groundwater level to drop.

It seems to stay dry for the foreseeable future.

The city of Nuremberg is reacting to the lack of water.

Nuremberg – One heat wave follows the next.

The weather in the last few weeks has presented nature and people with a challenge.

Meteorologists are calling for rain, especially in Franconia the dry season continues.

The first districts are reacting to the lack of water with rules, they regulate, among other things, who can use how much and which water for watering.

The city of Nuremberg is now reacting with a different, creative solution.

Water shortage in Franconia: Nuremberg pours city trees with swimming pool water

To save energy, Nuremberg had three of the four indoor pools closed almost three weeks ago.

According to the city's press release, the city's own Nuremberg Bad (NüBad) and the Nuremberg Public Space Service (Sör) have joined forces this summer and form "an alliance against drought".

They pump the swimming pool water out of the closed Südwestbad and Nordostbad indoor pools and use it to water the trees in the city.

“Due to the longer and more extreme heat waves, we need more watering, especially for our city trees.

I asked NüBad and Sör whether we wanted to go down a creative path.

That actually worked," Mayor Christian Vogel, who is also the first plant manager of Sör and NüBad, is quoted as saying.

Nuremberg pumps swimming pool water: "Technically and logistically not that easy"

Sör would currently supply around 9,500 trees with around 18 million liters of water a year.

Within the Mittlerer Ring in Nuremberg, four Sör watercraft are in operation in three shifts from April to October.

"Technically and logistically, it wasn't that easy to create the conditions," says Vogel.

200,000 liters of water could then be pumped out of the Südstadtbad and reused.

“Around 20 water wagons could be filled with this.”

The chlorine in the water had previously broken down and the water could therefore be reused without any problems.

"Even if it's not a huge step: I think it shows that we can and must all become more creative when it comes to saving water and energy," says Vogel with certainty.
