Abortion debate revived in Denmark

The reversal of the American Supreme Court causes a shock wave in this country where access to abortion is strictly regulated.

The revocation by the Supreme Court of the United States, on June 24, of the Roe vs. Wade judgment has reignited the debate on voluntary termination of pregnancy in Denmark.

The Scandinavian kingdom was a pioneer by adopting a law in 1973 authorizing free and free abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy.

But nearly fifty years later, this country ranks among the most conservative and restrictive on the continent in this area.

“It is time to dust off this law and discuss the legitimacy of this 12-week threshold, which is low compared to other countries such as Iceland, Sweden, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, varying between 14 and 24 weeks”

observes Maja Torp, spokesperson for the Liberal Party (leader of the opposition).

She points out:

“Our Norwegian neighbours, who have the same limit as us, are currently debating this question”

.

The Labor Party in power in Oslo is indeed pushing to extend this limit on abortion…
