The Census and Statistics Department announced today (11th) the latest provisional data on the population by the middle of this year. As of the middle of this year, the resident population of Hong Kong was 7,291,600, a decrease of 1.6% over the same period last year. Excluding the inbound population holding one-way permits, the net outflow of Hong Kong residents was 113,200, a 27% increase over the same period last year.

According to the Census and Statistics Department, as of the middle of this year, Hong Kong's permanent resident population was 7.1819 million, while floating residents accounted for 109,700.

After deducting 18,300 inflows holding one-way permits, the net outflow of Hong Kong residents was 113,200.

Government: Emigration may be jobs, readers and immigrants

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government emphasized that the net migration covers the movement of Hong Kong residents in and out of Hong Kong for various purposes such as work, study and immigration, but there is no breakdown of the figures.

Therefore, the Government does not have direct statistics on the immigration of Hong Kong people.

The spokesman reiterated that, as an international city, Hong Kong's population has always been highly mobile.
