Podcast "Inside Austria": Power struggle and intrigues in the right

2022-08-13T14:45:54.208Z

The alleged suicide attempt by an FPÖ politician reveals a power struggle among Austria's right-wing populists. At the center is the controversial party leader Herbert Kickl.

Hans-Jörg Jenewein, longtime politician of the right-wing populist FPÖ, was unknown to many people in Austria until recently.

But since last week his name has suddenly been in the headlines.

As Austrian media reports, Jenewein is said to have reported party colleagues for misuse of donations - anonymously.

He is then pushed out of the party.

He is said to have attempted suicide on Sunday night.

Jenewein survived the suicide attempt and is doing well given the circumstances.

But the case should not be settled for a long time.

He reveals a power struggle in the FPÖ that has been smoldering for months.

Is party leader Kickl behind the ad?

Many in the FPÖ suspect that Jenewein is not the only one behind the anonymous complaint against party friends.

Jenwein was considered the right hand of party leader Herbert Kickl, it is unlikely that the man behind him acted without the knowledge of his party leader.

In addition, the ad is directed against leaders of the Viennese FPÖ and the former party leader and Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache.

Kickl has been waging a bitter power struggle against them since he took over the party chairmanship last year.

So was it Kickl who instructed his henchman to create the anonymous complaint against party rivals?

Has Hans-Jörg Jenewein become the pawn of an internal party intrigue?

In this episode of "Inside Austria" we talk about the power struggle in the FPÖ.

We roll up the events of the past week and explain what is behind the anonymous report and the alleged suicide attempt by an FPÖ official.

And we ask whether the cause could bring down party leader Herbert Kickl.

In the weekly podcast “Inside Austria”, SPIEGEL and STANDARD look together at the big and small scandals in Austria.

Together with journalists from both editorial offices, we reconstruct cases and events that move the country.

We look into political abysses, follow the investigations into the cause of Sebastian Kurz and his ÖVP.

And inform about an important Austrian topic of the week.
