Anglers found hundreds of dead fish in the Saale on Friday.

Videos show the suffering of the animals.

A technical malfunction in a company could be the cause.

Bernburg/Munich - The image of dead fish on the water surface is already familiar from the Oder.

On Friday, anglers found dead fish in the Saale below the weir in Bernburg.

One of the finders shared shocking videos on Facebook.

You can see lifeless fish floating on the water surface.

Some jump out of the water in a life-or-death struggle.

A possible cause of fish deaths in the Saale became public.

Hundreds of dead fish in the Saale - possible cause found

As the anglers' association announced, anglers found dead fish in the Saale on Friday morning.

Over the weekend, the association was able to salvage around 300 dead fish.

Estimates assume that 3,000 fish died, according to the fishing association.

The Landesanglerverband Sachsen-Anhalt eV filed a complaint with the public prosecutor's office against persons unknown.

An angler who was present when the dead fish were found shared several videos on Facebook that showed the tragic extent of the fish kill.

In it you can see dead fish floating in the river and gathering on the bank.

Fish can also be seen jumping out of the river.

"Several carp jumped wildly out of the water in agony," the angler told

Bild.de.

Dead fish have been recovered from the German-Polish border river Oder since last week.

Investigations into the accident are still ongoing.

A connection between the fish kills in the Oder and in the Saale is not suspected.

Fish deaths in the Saale - technical fault as a possible cause

The soda company "Solvay" announced that there was a technical malfunction on Friday morning.

There is said to have been a crack in a pipe.

As a result, ammoniacal brine could escape, as reported by the German Press Agency.

A spokeswoman told MDR Saxony-Anhalt that direct action had been taken.

How much brine could flow into the Saale is still unclear.

"But we are now investigating how it could happen that something could get into the Saale despite our safety precautions," said the spokeswoman.

Ammoniacal brine is liquid and is required by the company to produce soda.

This, in turn, is used to make glass and cleaning supplies.

The water protection police took water samples to be evaluated by the State Criminal Police Office, the MDR reported.
