Today (Thursday), the police will request the release of Petach Tikva Mayor Rami Greenberg to house arrest and removal from the municipal building. The mayor's attorney intends to oppose the conditions of release and especially the demand to permanently remove the mayor from the city hall.
"Fleas and ticks in the detention cell": Greenberg's defense attorney alluded to wrongful arrest // Tilom: Paz Bar
As you may recall, Greenberg was arrested last week on suspicion of serious bribery offenses.
Together with him, the director general of the municipality and two other contractors were also arrested and are expected to be released today as well.
The police investigation began following a suspicion that during the local government elections held in 2018, two interested businessmen transferred funds, in the amount of hundreds of thousands of shekels, to the election campaign of the candidate for mayor at the time and in return, promised them that he would work to advance their economic affairs, after he was elected.
The investigation is being conducted in cooperation with the Diamond Unit of the Tax Authority and is accompanied by the Economic Department of the State Attorney's Office.
In accordance with the developments and for the needs of the investigation, the suspects will be brought during the day for a discussion on the extension of their detention at the Peace Court in Israel.
The police commented on the arrests, saying that they will continue to act wherever there is a suspicion of public corruption, which harms the order of government, and that an investigation will be conducted with the aim of uncovering improper processes, reaching the truth and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
"Fleas and Ticks"
In one of the hearings on the extension of his detention, Greenberg's lawyer claimed that the police laws are trying to put undue pressure on him, especially with the fleas and ticks that Greenberg had to deal with during the arrest.
It is also claimed that he was not provided with a suitable mattress to sleep on.
"For who knows how many times I have to tell the court about the fact that in the detention center you meet all kinds of creatures with eight legs, fleas and ticks," claimed Attorney Bartel. That the court will take this into account because it is beyond criticism."
Attorney Bartel claimed that police officers who did not give him the opportunity to represent his client. "This is something he will not do," said the defense attorney. "I will not file a complaint, but I think this whole issue is part of the pressure they are exerting and it is wrong."
