Ahead of Abu Mazen's speech at the UN - Palestinian officials: "If Israel was serious, it would act and not just talk" | Israel Hayom

"We don't know if Lapid will win the elections, and even if he does, he might be tied to a right-wing coalition," the Palestinians say about Lapid's support for the two-state vision. And also: what are the scenarios for the PA chairman's speech at the UN?

Abu Mazen will give a speech tomorrow (Friday) at the UN Assembly, a speech in which he is expected to make harsh accusations against Israel, the terrorist organizations are threatening to escalate if more Jews are allowed to go up to the Temple Mount during the Tishrei holidays. Hamas continues to poison the atmosphere and agitate the area while publishing messages calling for the escalation of the conflict with Israel At the same time, there are calls on social media for the Palestinian public to come en masse to the Temple Mount to "thwart the extremist settlers' plans to take over the place."

Abu Mazen and PA officials are in New York, where they are holding a series of meetings with leaders and heads of state.

During the meetings, Abu Mazen emphasized the importance of the two-state solution, saying that this is the only way to achieve peace.

He also accused the Israeli government of "working to thwart the establishment of the Palestinian state by increasing IDF operations throughout Judea and Samaria," and placed it in charge of the security escalation.

Although the Palestinian Authority did not officially address Prime Minister Lapid's support for the two-state vision, in Ramallah they said that "if Israel was serious about its intentions, it would work to implement the establishment of a Palestinian state, and take steps to strengthen it on the ground, and not wait for speeches at the United Nations."

"Tired of talk, we need to move on to action. Israel had enough time and opportunities to move a political horizon and give the chairman of the Authority something.

Until now, Israel has worked to make the issue of the two states disappear.

Suddenly remembering at the last moment before a speech at the UN to talk about a Palestinian state, it's a strange thing. If the Israelis really wanted to promote negotiations with the Palestinian leadership, they would first have to make moves to show that it has real intentions.

Israel seems to want to talk now about two states when in practice it is behaving the opposite way and over the years it has destroyed the ability to implement this idea," sources in Ramallah told Israel Hayom.

Along with the skepticism voiced by elements in Fatah and the PLO, there are also among the Palestinians who believe that Lapid's decision to present the two-state vision may give hope after many years when the idea was absent from the agenda. "Even if nothing comes of it in the end, and even if it is only The paper is still a good thing.

Just talking about a political horizon can contribute to a slightly more positive atmosphere.

The problem is that no one knows if it will really help, many people don't believe in anything anymore.

We heard many promises that led to nothing.

And who knows if Lapid will be elected in your elections, and even if he is elected, it does not necessarily mean that he will be able to advance the vision in the event that he has a right-wing coalition."

There were even those who attributed "Lapid's surprise" to the great diplomatic effort that PA Chairman Abu Mazen recently invested with the countries of the world. He had a continuous and concentrated dialogue with various leaders and urged them to move a political horizon.

As mentioned, tomorrow PA Chairman Abu Mazen will stand above the stage of the UN General Assembly and deliver his annual speech.

Last year he issued an ultimatum to Israel and warned that if it does not withdraw from the territories of Judea and Samaria, the Palestinian Authority will suspend recognition of it and the agreements signed with it.

Sources in Ramallah say that in his speech he will review the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and attack Israel for "the actions and violations it commits against the Palestinians."

He is expected to raise the issue of offsetting tax money and talk about "settler violence in Judea and Samaria".

According to one scenario, he will ask the world to recognize "Palestine as a state with the status of a full member of the United Nations", and will say that Israel has challenged the implementation of the two-state solution. According to a second scenario, he will repeat his warnings and threaten to implement the decisions of the Central Council of the PLO, which include the The suspension of relations and security coordination with Israel.

According to another, more extreme scenario, it will be announced to sever ties with Israel and renounce the agreements with it.

"The situation is complicated. Abu Mazen put himself in an almost impossible situation. On the one hand, he gave Israel an ultimatum, and if he does not keep his word, he breaks his credibility, and on the other hand, he knows that if he decides to announce in a real and decisive manner the end of relations with Israel, it is a dramatic step which may have consequences and it is not certain that he wants it. He kept talking about the need for a political horizon and therefore it will not be easy for him to announce the suspension of relations with Israel precisely now while the Israeli government is putting this issue on the table. Lapid is now giving Abu Mazen a ladder to get off the ultimatum that placed," said a Palestinian official.

"On the other hand, Abu Mazen may take his position to an extreme due to the announcements that the British Prime Minister will consider moving its embassy to Jerusalem. We are already interpreting this as Balfour Declaration No. 2 and there is great anger around it. In the end, Abu Mazen may say: "The world must recognize Palestine, and if not , the Palestinian leadership will be forced to suspend recognition and relations with Israel."
