The Homs Agriculture Directorate estimated the governorate’s production of olive oil for the current agricultural season at more than 16 thousand tons, resulting from the pressing of approximately 74 thousand tons of olives, according to preliminary estimates.
The director of Homs Agriculture, Younis Hamdan, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the expected production of olives for the current season is about 93 thousand tons, an increase of about 50 thousand tons compared to last year, while the number of fruitful olive trees is 13.8 million trees out of the total 15 million olive trees planted in the governorate. .
In turn, the head of the department of specialized offices in the directorate, Eng. Naji Saed, indicated that the general condition of the olive crop for the current season is good, especially in the western rural areas, while it is considered medium in the eastern countryside.
Regarding the reality of the mills and their readiness to receive the crop, Saed said that there are 54 mills, which are expected to receive the crop for the current season. The first of next October has been set as the date to start picking olives, and the mills have started processing and experimenting in preparation for receiving the crop.
For their part, a number of olive growers indicated that the olive harvest for the current year is good compared to the previous season, and there are no epidemic diseases, stressing the need to provide production requirements at encouraging prices, especially fuels and fertilizers.
The olive crop is one of the main crops in the governorate, and provides a source of income for many families.
