The Wolfratshausen local branch of the VdK celebrated its 75th anniversary.

The association as "the social conscience of the city" received many words of praise.

Wolfratshausen – With 2.1 million members, the Association of War Invalids, War Survivors and Social Pensioners, VdK for short, is the largest social organization in Germany.

After the Second World War, local associations were founded everywhere, including in Wolfratshausen.

On May 10, 1947, twelve committed women and men launched the local branch at a meeting in the Löwenbräu.

In the first few years they mainly procured firewood and food for the needy.

In the 1950s, the members campaigned for the construction of the VdK housing estate on Anemonenstrasse and Enzianstrasse.

From the 1990s onwards, they also supported disabled people, the chronically ill and early retirees.

Because the purpose of the association has been repeatedly adapted to the circumstances, the influx is still large.

Josef Streicher has been loyal to VdK Wolfratshausen for 74 years.

On Friday evening, the board of directors and some of the currently around 1200 members celebrated the 75th anniversary with a cozy evening in the Loisachhalle.

Dressed entirely in the association's colors of blue and white, chairwoman Gabriele Skiba welcomed a number of guests of honor, including the VdK chairmen from Geretsried, Königsdorf, Dietramszell and Degerndorf.

She was particularly pleased about the visit of Josef Streicher, who has been a member for 74 years.

VdK Wolfratshausen: Mayor Heilinglechner "so far few points of contact"

Mayor Klaus Heilinglechner, on the other hand, had "little points of contact" with the social association, as he admitted in his welcoming address.

But after his parents are at an age when the issue of care is pending, that could change quickly, he said.

As mayor, he is glad that the city can count on such a strong and active local association.

"You are the social conscience of our city," he said, handing Skiba a bouquet of flowers on behalf of her team.

Help for people in need: This is how the VdK helps the needy

The laudatory speech was given by former District Administrator Manfred Nagler.

He practically grew up with the VdK, as he said.

His mother was the local chairman in his hometown in Holledau.

She regularly discussed with her deputy in the kitchen who in the village needed what kind of help, who should get one of the requested stays in the convalescent home.

"It was a time of compassion and mercy," recalled Nagler, himself an orphan after his father died in the war.

During his tenure as mayor of Egling and later as district administrator, he always experienced the VdK as a reliable partner in social issues.

Later, when he was seriously ill himself, he realized how important the help of the experts was when filling out the countless forms or even just reading a doctor's letter.

Laudatio full of life experience and music by the Heini-Zapf-Trio

The 83-year-old, who had to go up and down the stairs to the stage with the help of a stick, did not complain at all.

Rather, he told anecdotes from his professional life in a relaxed conversational tone, sometimes a bit digressive, but the room was still as quiet as a mouse.

Everyone enjoyed listening to this man with great life experience.

"My wife always says: 'You can tell stories,'" concluded speaker Nagler with a knowing smile.

Gabriele Skiba replied that that was exactly why she chose him as the laudator.

Accompanied by the Heini-Zapf trio, the evening ended with a sociable meal.
