A Samuel Paty Prize for freedom of expression

On the occasion of the two years of the assassination of Samuel Paty, the Association of History-Geography Teachers (APHG) launched a prize in his name.


On October 16, it will be two years since Samuel Paty, professor of history and geography at the Bois-d'Aulne college in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine (Yvelines), was assassinated not far from his establishment by an Islamist terrorist.

Since this tragedy, which has had a lasting impact on the educational community, tributes have multiplied.

Several schools and the square in front of the Sorbonne have been renamed “Samuel-Paty”.

The teacher's research dissertation was published posthumously by Presses Universitaires de Lyon.

The first anniversary of his death was commemorated in all establishments in France.

And Pap Ndiaye chose to go to the Bois-d'Aulne college for his first trip as Minister of National Education.

The prize values ​​and rewards work done by students as part of a class project in order to promote pedagogical cooperation.

For its part, the Association of History and Geography Teachers (APHG) has launched a Samuel-Paty Prize.

“enable students to better understand why freedom of expression is essential in the classroom and in society”.

Three projects were awarded

On the second anniversary of the tragedy, the first Samuel-Paty prize will be awarded at the Sorbonne on Saturday October 15, in the presence of Minister Pap Ndiaye and Samuel Paty's sister.

The theme chosen for this first edition is: “Are we still free to express ourselves?”

About forty groups of students, from establishments in mainland France, overseas and abroad, took part in this first edition.

Three projects were singled out by the jury chaired by Christophe Capuano, professor of the history of contemporary societies at the University of Grenoble Alpes and former classmate of Samuel Paty.

With their podcast in several episodes centered on freedom of expression, it was the fourth-grade class from Marie-Mauron college in Pertuis (Vaucluse) who won first place, ahead of a group of fourth-third from Willy-Mabrut college. from Bourg-Lastic (Puy-de-Dôme) and a group of ten students from the sign language course at the Gaston-Bachelard college in Dijon (Côte-d'Or).

The 2023 edition of the prize will be aimed at middle and high school students in the general, technological and professional pathways.

It will focus on the theme: “Foxes: what dangers for democracy?”

The 2023 prize poster was designed by urban artist C215 - the 2022 prize poster was the work of artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest.
