The DPRK expressed its support and respect for the will of the people of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson provinces to join the Russian Federation, which was reflected in the results of the referendum held from 23 to 27 last month.
"These referendums were conducted in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, which lays down the principles of equality between peoples and their right to self-determination, as well as by following the various methods and legitimate procedures that take into account and reflect the will of the residents of the two republics and provinces.”
The statement continued: "The vast majority of participants in the referendums expressed their support for the idea of joining Russia, and we respect the desire of the population who aspire to join and support the position of the Russian government to make these regions a part of the Russian entity."
The statement pointed out that the UN Security Council voted on the thirtieth of last month on a resolution submitted by the United States against the results of these referendums, which was stopped by Russia by using its legal right of veto, adding: “Washington, with the aim of preserving the unipolar world, continues to interfere in the internal affairs of countries.” It is the same old trick that has been used and witnessed by the world not only in the last century, but in the twenty-first century as well.
The statement clarified that the United States launched aggressive wars against sovereign countries, including the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Iraq, but it was not summoned to the Security Council to be questioned and held accountable for these wars. However, the time when Washington could use the Council as a cover and an aggressive means to maintain its hegemony will never return.
The DPRK Foreign Ministry warned that if the Security Council were to participate in violating the rights and fundamental interests of sovereign states by adopting a roadblocking approach and illogical double standards, in contravention of the objectives and principles of the UN Charter, it would bear full responsibility for the consequences.
