After the September 11 attacks and the DSK affair, Julien Bellver deciphers the media treatment of #MeToo.

This "9 p.m. Media" coincides with the five years of the Weinstein affair, which broke out on October 5, 2017 following revelations from the New York Times.

Revelations that will give birth to the movement for the liberation of women's speech in the face of sexual violence.

Using archive images, the magazine looks back at the origins of #MeToo and its spread around the world, particularly in France.

For this documentary, Julien Bellver collected the testimonies of Marine Turchi and Lenaïg Bredoux, the two journalists from Médiapart who initiated major investigations on this subject in France;

Anne-Cécile Mailfert, president of the Women's Foundation;

and Philippe Corbé and Jean-Michel Aphatie who covered the most significant events of the five years of this movement.

- Why take an interest in the MeToo movement in this third issue of “21H Médias”?

Julien BELLVER.

– First of all because it is an anniversary date, October 5, it has been 5 years since the Weinstein affair broke out in the United States.

It was important to us to come back to this movement, the various cases both in the United States and in France, as well as the repercussions.

How did you proceed?

As we usually do.

The idea is always to revisit an event, so we repatriated with our documentation service hours and hours of rushes, mainly testimonies of women who were sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein and by so many others in the United States.

We must be between 150 and 200 hours of rush.

What do these archives reveal?

Already, this highlights a mind-blowing evolution.

In five years, when you remember all the cases that have taken place, it's quite dizzying.

We don't necessarily realize it, but in the United States, a lot has happened since the Weinstein affair.

There were several journalists and animators who fell one after the other in the first year.

That's the first part of the documentary, we come back to the whirlwind MeToo in the United States.

Then the second part concerns the repercussions in France, which were a little different, a little slower.

That's to say ?

Very quickly we talk about the #MeToo movement, what is happening in the United States around Harvey Weinstein is told in the JT, the 20H, the sets of the news channels.

On the other hand, it will take one to two years before we appropriate this subject, examine it and do our own examination of conscience.

It is in particular the Adèle Haenel affair, revealed by Médiapart, which will be the real MeToo trigger in France.

Not to mention of course the Balance your pig movement which we will talk a lot about.

But the real French awareness of MeToo is with the Adèle Haenel affair.

In the 21H Médias devoted to the DSK affair you pointed out that at the time the elements of language designated him at the beginning as the victim then, thereafter, things evolved.

What about MeToo?

There is roughly the same pattern, which shows that we have not necessarily learned all the lessons of the DSK scandal.

In the first weeks, the first months, at least in France, we talk a lot about the aggressors, about their psychology.

Afterwards we feel that the cursor shifts on the weight of the words of the victims.

It takes a little time to infuse in the French media.

But in the end, it happens quite quickly.

It's quite interesting to decipher.
