The pilots of the airline Eurowings are on strike on Thursday – half of the flights are expected to be cancelled.

Airports in North Rhine-Westphalia are particularly affected.

Düsseldorf/Cologne – After the strike announced by the pilots of the airline Eurowings, the company's first flights were canceled on Thursday (October 4).

The airline had to cancel almost half of its 500 planned flights, and up to 30,000 passengers remained on the ground.

An overview shows: Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports are particularly affected.

Eurowings: 118 flights are canceled in Düsseldorf due to a pilot strike

Düsseldorf Airport:

Düsseldorf recorded nine canceled flights in the morning, including to Zurich, Athens, London and Munich.

According to earlier information from the airport, 118 flights are likely to be canceled at Eurowings' largest location on Thursday.

Another 60 are to take place.

Cologne/Bonn Airport:

Eight canceled flights were listed in Cologne/Bonn, for example to Berlin, Vienna, Palma de Mallorca and Hamburg.

A total of 61 of the planned 90 flights were canceled.

Stuttgart Airport:

Several Eurowings flights were also canceled there on Thursday morning.

A flight to Berlin was canceled as well as flights to Milan, Vienna, Palma de Mallorca or London, as the airport announced on its website.

Of the 86 take-offs and landings originally planned, 32 are expected to remain on schedule.

Karlsruhe Airport:

The only Eurowings flight of the day to Mallorca from Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden is cancelled.

Hamburg Airport:

72 Eurowings connections are canceled here.

Only Eurowings Germany flights are affected by the strike, not Eurowings Europe flights.

The long-haul subsidiary Eurowings Discover, which flies from Frankfurt and Munich, is also excluded.

Eurowings: Worse working conditions than at Lufthansa

Eurowings intends to carry out half of the flight program despite the strike.

On average, Eurowings offers around 500 flights a day, transporting 50,000 to 70,000 passengers to destinations in Germany and Europe.

The union Vereinigung Cockpit has called for a walkout at the Lufthansa subsidiary after negotiations on a general collective agreement failed.

Eurowings condemned the strike as "disproportionate and irresponsible".

The background to the strike is also that the pilots at Eurowings earn much less than their colleagues at Lufthansa - but work longer on average.
