The district of Munich is happy about any accommodation that it can provide for refugees.

In the Bauhofstraße in Unterföhring, the running time is now being extended.

Unterföhring

– The refugee accommodation in Bauhofstraße will remain open for another five years until the end of 2030.

The extension is based on a request from the district of Munich.

The district is running out of options of its own.

As a prerequisite, the municipality obliges the district office to ensure social care.

The accommodation, which opened in 2016 for 175 asylum seekers at the time on the site of Bauhofstraße 10, was actually supposed to be closed at the end of 2025.

With the now promptly formulated application, the district office underlined the importance of the Foehringer accommodation for the district.

Some terms cannot be extended

While asylum seekers continue to push their way to Europe via the Mediterranean and the Middle East, the war in Ukraine and the accompanying stream of refugees have changed the situation for the district.

In contrast, it does not appear possible to extend the lifespans of a number of shelters in the county ten years after the 2015/2016 refugee crisis.

Mayor Andreas Kemmelmeyer (PWU) referred to providers such as "Feel Home", whose accommodations have in the meantime reached or even exceeded the limit of their intended lifespan in one or the other municipality.

"We didn't work with Feel Home," said Kemmelmeyer.

Even if certain parts of the facility and sanitary facilities were damaged, the accommodation on Bauhofstrasse is still largely intact.

There is a lack of living space for recognized asylum seekers

Another reason for the shortage of accommodation is that there is a lack of living space for recognized asylum seekers in almost the entire district.

In order not to burden communities such as Unterföhring with recognized asylum seekers, who would mostly become homeless after their release from the refugee accommodation, recognized refugees are also allowed to stay in the accommodation in the district.

Glad for any accommodation

After the release, it would be the task of the local municipality to provide the people with housing.

The district is therefore happy for any accommodation that remains open beyond the originally planned period.

As far as the Bauhofstraße is concerned, one had even speculated on 2041.

The community does not want to get involved in such a long period of time.

The Unterföhring volunteer group, which was recently awarded the integration prize for its achievements, should not be burdened with the decision.
